Day Trips With Dogs Southern California – Palm Springs, California is located in the Coachella Valley of the Sonoran Desert, about 100 miles east of Los Angeles. A popular tourist town for years, Palm Springs is known for its natural hot springs, hotels, restaurants, golf courses, sunny weather and, of course, dog-friendliness.
Downtown Palm Springs continues to evolve with new shops, restaurants, hotels, and neighborhoods, including the development of the North section in the Uptown Design District. The annual Coachella and Stagecoach festivals draw attention to desert cities, and January’s Palm Springs International Film Festival is attracting big names and growing visitor numbers.

In addition to Palm Springs, “Greater Palm Springs” includes eight cities: Desert Hot Springs, Temple City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, and Coachella. Tourism plays a major role in the local economy. I would recommend staying in Palm Springs and exploring other cities by car. Palm Desert has a great outdoor mall and is perfect for Indio/Coachella photo shoots or festivals (without the dog).
Ultimate Dog Friendly Texas Road Trip
We have visited many dog friendly places and when I say Palm Springs is the most dog friendly city we have ever visited, I mean it! It’s hard to explain, but we had a very welcoming feeling everywhere we went with Ruby, and we hope to capture that in this comprehensive guide.
Although the weather in Palm Springs is pleasant year-round, there are times when winter and early spring are considered best to visit. Palm Springs feels special during the winter months of November through January, because while other areas are cold and snowy, Palm Springs has sunshine and temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees.
Traveling to Palm Springs with your dog after March is not recommended. Unless your only plan is in the pool for the duration of your visit. Summer temperatures typically range between 100℉ and 115℉ and humidity is less than 10%.
Palm Springs and its surrounding desert habitat are truly atmospheric and one of the things I love about visiting this city. I love mid-century modern architecture and desert luxury, so I’d be in heaven for a hotel or house rental in the area.

Boozehounds Palm Springs was founded by three friends for one simple reason: they loved dogs and dreamed of a place where people could bring their pups, enjoy great cocktails or great food, and socialize in style. This is the most dog-friendly restaurant we’ve visited for two reasons: 1) the dog menu is elite and offers fresh food options with common protein allergies, and 2) the fact that dogs are allowed in the atrium for dinner. San Diego’s Coolest Dog Friendly Places
4 Paws Coffee Co. Another dog-themed establishment in Palm Springs that you must visit. We were welcomed with open arms as soon as we walked in the door and the cafe was decked out in dog-centric decor and merchandise. We had pastries and coffee with Roo at the cafe and Cup Pilla gave her a hug. Purchases from the cafe support their efforts to give back to local shelters and reinforce their mission to bring great coffee, food and connection to the Palm Springs community.
Moorton Botanical Gardens is a privately owned arboretum created to share the beauty and unusual species of desert plants with all who visit. Featured desert trees, plants and cacti come from all over the world and range in size from small to gigantic. They are home to the world’s first cactus, my favorite part of the garden, and they allow the dogs to run in the garden.
Parking for the garden is on the corner opposite the entrance to S Palm Canyon Dr. Admission is $5 per person, dogs are free. This small garden can be walked around the property in 30 minutes. We spent a bit more time here as we were interested in photographing the cactus. If you visit during the week, you’ll be lucky with more or less crowds.
One thing unique to Southern California is all the wind turbine sites. They actually do official tours in Palm Springs to see them up close, but I’m not sure if dogs are allowed. We chose to search for ourselves.
The 7 Best Dog Friendly Weekend Getaways In Northern California
Take Indian Canyon Drive and I-10 to Garnett to see the background below. If you are heading north to Indian Canyon, turn left on Garnet and go about 1/4 mile and you will see places where you can park. There is almost no traffic in this area, so unless you have a large road block, you can park wherever you want to film.
I recommend going at sunset. The desert really shows off cotton candy skies at sunset, but the sun hides behind the mountains early, so come before sunset. There are fences around the turbines, but the bleak background of the mountains and the bush doesn’t really stand out. All you have to do is hug.
Although visiting Joshua Tree National Park with your furry friend is restricted, there are many dog-friendly activities that allow you to experience the park’s diverse landscape while visiting with your dog. We have visited Ruby many times and came up with the best Joshua Tree itinerary for a half-day or full-day visit to the park.
This mid-century community is a gem for those interested in mid-century modern architecture. Almost every home in Indian Canyon was built in the mid-century with large glass windows, large porches and wide access to the pool. Hence it has a rich architectural history and a stunning, unobstructed view of the mountains.
California Dog Owners Warned Of Lethal River Parasite
You’ve probably seen some of these homes on Instagram with their well-furnished and colorful front doors. The best way to enjoy these houses is to park your car and walk around the streets. I especially liked the South Yosemite and South Camino Real houses.
Downtown Palm Springs has a dog-friendly feel. It is a vibrant center full of unique shops, restaurants and arts. We had a lot of people come up and say how well-behaved Ruby was, and all the shop owners were immediately drawn to Ruby and wanted to pet her, water and treats. If you’ve been following us on social media, you know that Ruby has faced stranger danger, but she quickly finds herself forced to offer a pet.
Downtown has a lot to offer, with major attractions on Palm Canyon Drive and Indian Canyon Drive. I recommend just iterating and jumping into what seems interesting. Palm Canyon South is a bit grittier and the northern section is more modern due to its recent revival as the Uptown Design District.
Some of the shops on my checklist: Ibis Women’s Boutique, Just Fabulous for Palm Springs souvenirs, Peepas, Out West Trading Co, Covet for Permanent Jewelry and Destination PSP. Destination PSP had some of the best mid-century home decor.

Downtown restaurants include Boozehounds, 1501 Uptown Gastropub, Ice Cream and Shop(pe), Tac/Quila (get the churro ice cream sandwich).

As you can see, Palm Springs has a thriving art scene, and in addition to large, obscure sculptures, there are many murals throughout the city. My favorite is Palm Greetings
